First Powerlifting Meet - Success!

 

Wow! Wow! and Wow! I have never been more proud of myself for stepping out of the box, putting myself in an uncomfortable situation, and excelling beyond my expectations. For those of you who don’t know me, failure is my biggest fear. Deep down I am competitive, but it takes a a lot for me to trust in myself and put myself out there. My first powerlifting meet allowed me to do that.

 

It is never too late to start competing (in anything!). To grow as a person, it is important we step out of the box, out of our comfort zones, and put ourselves out there. As I was working a client of mine this morning, I noticed that she was challenge her self a bit more than usual and when I said you have to struggle to get stronger, she knew exactly what I was talking about. This applies to both the mind and the body. Get out there and do something that defeats your fear and shows you how strong you really are!

 

The Meet: 

Going in, my goal was to go 9 for 9 and get a total to start.

  • Each competitor gets 3 attempts at each lift (Squat, Bench, Deadlift). With each attempt he/she chooses an opening weight, a 2nd weight, and a 3rd weight. Once you complete your opening weight, you can choose to stay or go up. This decision is made based on the success of your previous attempt. If you fail all three attempts for any of the lifts, you don’t receive a total for that lift. Here is where strategy comes into play and I had an eye opener when it came time to bench.

  • 3 white lights is a successful lift, 2 white lights and 1 red is a successful lift, more than 1 red light is an unsuccessful lift.

Prior to the start of the meet, I set up my three attempts for each lift and would adjust accordingly based on the success of each one. Here are my first meet errors and successes.

Squat 

  • 100 KG (220.4 lbs) – Successful – Lowest squat I’ve every done at that weight, but had to make depth was on point to get the white lights! My legs were shaken so bad, but it told myself “JUST STAND UP!”

  • 102.5 KG (225.9 lbs) – Successful

  • 105 KG (231.4 lbs) – Successful

Bench Press

  • 60 KG (132.2 lbs) – Failed – So many variables to think about and after hitting this weight 100x in training, it can be very difficult to figure out. My lesson – take your time on set up and make sure its correct before you take your lift off. Don’t rush it, I knew my grip felt off and too close and I went for it anyways.

  • 62.5 KG (137.5 lbs) – Failed – Should have re-attempted 60KG, but couldn’t wrap my ahead around not getting a weight that I’ve done a million times.

  • 65 KG – Stayed at 62.5 KG – Failed

  • Additional take ways; practice longer pauses during training – its a variable that you can’t control at the meet, but you can train smarter so that it is not a concern.

Deadlift 

  • 107.5 KG (236.9 lbs) – Successful

  • 110 KG (242.5 lbs) – Successful and so smooth, beyond my expectation.

  • Estimated attempt 112.5 KG (148.0 lbs), Actual Attempt 115 KG (253.5 lbs) – 110 just felt too smooth that I knew I had to take the opportunity and set a new PR! It’s an 8 lb increase & successful attempt!

I finished the day with 6/9 with a total of 484.9. Could have been 617.1 if I would have came through on bench. No need to dwell here, just a lesson learned and back to the grind for next time.

I couldn’t be more thankful for the experience I had this weekend. It has opened the doors to a career in powerlifting (next meet will be roughly 16 weeks out and I am already pumped!). I am also thankful for the support of the 100% RAW Powerlifting community and my clients, friends, and family members who believed in me.
